Carpet looks like it should be recyclable — it’s mostly fiber, after all. The challenge is that most carpet is made from a blend of nylon, polyester, polypropylene, and backing materials bonded together, making separation difficult and expensive at the facility level.
As a result, the vast majority of discarded carpet ends up in landfills. In California, some carpet retailers participate in the Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE), which operates a network of collection and recycling facilities — but access varies and volume limitations apply.
